His medical records show persistent ear infections, unexplained fevers, seizures and digestive ailments. His mother detailed the boy’s health struggles on social media and fabricated an elaborate backstory regarding his paternity.

Spears told police she sometimes used “a pinch of salt” for flavor when feeding her son and that once in a while he would play with the syringe she used to feed him, claiming it was possible he put something in his tube.


Lacey Spears was drawn to children, surrounding herself with babies at the day care centers where she worked in Decatur, Alabama, and volunteering as a babysitter from an early age.

Quite appalling indeed. One of the failures of imagination that crops up from time to time is our ability to imagine that someone who claims to protect another person, someone more vulnerable than themselves, could be wilfully killing them for their own gain. In the first place it is aberrant behaviour but in the second place we are just naturally disposed to disbelieve that people would do such a thing. That makes it difficult to detect - people don't look for what couldn't possibly be. If evidence comes to light they often prefer to disbelieve it.
