Break out the sweaters, jackets and maybe even the thermal underwear.
South Florida should wake up to potentially record cold, with the mercury forecast to plunge into the upper 40s in West Palm Beach and about 50 degrees in Broward County’s metro areas. It also should be breezy, adding to the nip in the air.
Palm Beach County’s all-time record low temperature for October – 46 degrees – was set on Oct. 30, 1968, but could fall on Tuesday. Fort Lauderdale’s cold record for this date, 52 degrees, set in 1953, also could be in jeopardy.

I think I posted else where that Oct 2012 is the first month that broke the record heat. We had 16 consecutive months of above normal temps. Oct. was the first slightly (about 1 degree) below average month.

Winter predictions are supposedly difficult this year because the main indicators aren't happening. Minnesota area is to be slightly warmer than average with decreased snowfall, still in the drought. We shall see what happens.

And as always weather is the conditions for as short period of time in a narrow area. Climate is the combined conditions over time over a broad region. Related but different.

Well I don't think we broke any records. The sky stayed somewhat overcast and the temps didn't drop quite as much as anticipated. Sucks!

We have a non-native insect called a Gumbo Limbo Spiraling Whitefly causing property owners/managers no end to headaches. They are a tropical insect so a good 2-3 days in the high 30's/low 40's should wipe them out. It would also help control the iquana and python problem. Here's hoping for another cold winter in FL like 2009-2010 winter was.

Even colder than usual for the last few days here. That's after a poor, cold summer of even more rain than usual.

Looks like another harsh (by our standards) winter ahoy.

I've never tried it, believe it or not. After the SFL record cold in 09, the iguana population took a huge hit. Before that 09 winter the nuisance was pretty bad. It was not unusual to pass certain intersections and see 2+ freshly run over iguana. Certain (tiny man made) ponds would have literally hundreds of iguana within sight. We used to have a couple rather large ones living in our tree. You'd be surprised how big they can get. It never really crossed my mind to round some up and do some bbq ;-) I may have to try it yet.

There was a funny local story during the 09 winter, I may have posted here. Some guy was driving around picking up large "dead" iguana and putting them in the back of his car. Problem was, they weren't "dead" only hibernating due to the cold. The warmth of the car brought them back to life and starting running about the car while he was driving :D

-Edit-
When I said you'd be surprised, I meant in general. You being in Texas probably know iguana as well or better than me.

Another Halloween without snow. Wish we had that when I was a kid.

No Iguana here, Laredo is a desert climate

There are iguana in the Rio Grande Valley, (non-native) which is a humid subtropical climate, and also where the citrus growing area is.

In Spanish, Iguana are called "gallina de palo" "chicken of the tree"

Thought you'd like an update since Oct broke the 16 month above average streak for Minnesota. Nov is back above average. About 2.3 degrees. We have the unusual event of no ice on lakes. When I was a kid and when my parents were kids ice skating during Thanksgiving was common place. As was snow sledding. We missed our average Nov 18th with the first inch of accumulation of snow. It appears the snow is as far south as north of Winnipeg. Minnesota winters are coming later and are shorter.

We had one of the coldest Octobers since records began.

November has been noticably warmer so far.

Oct 29th, 2012 - I lived through Hurricane Sandy

just saying....

I think you should buy yourself one of these:

Glad you made it through OK.
well, thanks...but the point is that climate change brought over Sandy.
last year we had Hurricane Irene.

Hurricanes were just NEVER like this when I was a child. Just never. Some branches would be on the ground but it was no big deal. And we NEVER had them year after year.

you have to be deaf dumb and blind not to see it

I've been avoiding bringing politics into this, but since you did... No, Sandy was NOT because of global warming. Sandy was a Cat-1. We Floridians laugh at Cat-1 storms. The NE was simply not prepared for a hurricane at all, any size. Just because people aren't prepared doesn't make it Global Warming.

I've lived through Cat-1's

this was different. And New Jersey getting floods from storms is nothing new. I discount them.
And we have had Nor'easters that flooded the FDR drive in Manhattan. That is rare but it's not impossible.

no, Sandy was very very different. You could not go two blocks without seeing a large tree down.

The other day I visited Clark Garden. It was closed because it wasn't safe for the public. 40 trees had fallen, bridges were broken......this is some of the material cleared out (resting at the entrance/parking lot).

take a look at Clark Garden on the map

sure, we were "unprepared", just not the way you think.
These sorts of storms will continue to happen and will get worse because people are not going to stop polluting this planet.

But I will do what I have to do to make sure power doesn't go out for my mother because she is too old to live in a house that could get cold after days with no power (no matter how good the insulation is, if it's cold out it will eventually get cold INside) , no land line phone service and no ability to cook hot food.

I'll survive long after the deniers drown

We can neither claim any particular storm was or was not due to Global Warming. What I've read from weathermen is the 'perfect storm' existed due to the conditions of the earth. The wind pattern out of Arctic had not yet changed, which it does (in most years) before now. The ocean was warmer than it normally is in most years. This kept the storm stronger and larger than it typically would have been, for this time of year.

I think I made this analogy before. I think it's a good one. We won't ever have direct evidence that any home runs were from steroid use. However, what we can see is indirectly steroid players hit more home runs and farther more often than non-steroid players. It's like this with Global Warming. We can see that warmer conditions are going to influence the weather though it's difficult to say this particular storm was, or wasn't, due to Global Warming. The best we're going to be able to come up with is a statistical probability measure .

Just what I was about to say. :D

We can see that warmer conditions are going to influence the weather

Well, some of us can. ;)
