Greenland Ice Sheet - fastest melting recorded

-EDIT-

It was actually snippet from that link that I was referring to:

the warmest May on record for the Northern Hemisphere –
the 327th consecutive month in which the temperature of the entire globe exceeded the 20th-century average

I'd agree Physics and the Planet are in cahoots!

"Ice cores from Summit station [Greenland’s coldest and highest] show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," said Lora Koenig, a Goddard glaciologist and a member of the research team analyzing the satellite data.

“97% of the surface melted 1mm”
Which equals what volume?

The great thing is the next time the Chicken Littles say the greenland ice cap is going to melt, I can reply “So what? 97% of it already melted back in 2012.” :smack:

When melting of 97% of the ice cap surface ends, (I predict this to occur within 2 months) does that mean that 97% of Greenland’s surface water refreezing that this rate of freezing is unprecedented!

as long as it happens....

Heat Trends are due to Climate Change In this new paper (so it still needs a serious look) it was statistically shown the heat events in Russia (2010) and US (2011) are statistically more likely to have happened due to the changing climate. In short, more of the Earth is hotter

In semi related news - in July Arkanas saw all days (except 1) above 100 degrees. The first time ever. Here in Minnesota July is the 2nd hottest July ever. (Hottest was 1936). Though we have the most consecutive days above 80 degrees ever, June 26 - Aug 4. One plus where I live hasn't seen the drought of the rest of the US. Though it is impacting us. We had to reserve our Hay for winter now. Minnesota farmers are seeing high prices and shipping their hay to the Southern USA. So we bought our 40 6' bales last week. Typically we don't have to worry until Oct.

@ faethor- we are seeing pretty substantial issues from the drought. ponds we rely on to supply water to "the girls" are gone, and the fields that fed them until september are burned up... we are all in for a harsh new reality...:(

@Robert, Sorry to hear that. I hope the drought goes away soon. Though the worst drought since the Dustbowl is predicted to be here until at least Oct. Hopefully winter will be rain and snow. The 30s drought lasted 8 years. It was problematic then. I can only imagine with the increase in population it's effect will be worse.

Now if someone could just cheaply ship water from Manila over to Kansas.
