@robert:

Also, the guy in your avatar looks a wee bit like Nick Mason.

I don't think anyone paying attention to this over the last few years will be remotely surprised by this development:

A REPORT compiled for Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al Megrahi's appeal against his conviction for the Lockerbie bombing claimed the police investigation into the case was "directed off course" by the CIA, it has emerged.

A private investigation, conducted by a former senior US prosecutor and ex-Metropolitan Police officer, concluded that Mohammed Abu Talb, an Egyptian militant, should have faced trial for the atrocity instead of Megrahi.

Yup. Not remotely. No tragedy, big or small, can ever be allowed to go to waste when there are political ends to be met.

At least Dr. Swire isn't giving up:
“We relatives need the truth about who murdered our families and article 2 of the human rights legislation guarantees our right to have it. Remember, while that truth is hidden, the true perpetrators are protected,” Dr Swire argues.

“Early next year, in face of the blank refusal of governments to mount any meaningful inquiry, certain relatives will apply to the SCCRC for a further appeal against the Megrahi verdict. It is likely that some of us will also pursue other routes to force an honest inquiry out of obdurate governments. Twenty-five years is too long, and we should not be opposed by our own elected governments.”

Lockerbie bombing conviction ‘crumbling’, says Jim Swire

“It’s now accepted by an ex-Justice Secretary that Megrahi might not have bought those clothes. It’s all very well for Mr MacAskill to say he’s got no doubt that he was involved in the bombing in some way, but that’s not how it works in criminal law

“If Megrahi did not buy those clothes that were found in the wreckage of Pan Am flight 103 then that casts doubt on his conviction.”

Nothing to hide?
Scottish judges rule Lockerbie documents will remain secret
Foreign secretary’s decision to withhold documents that could absolve Libyan Abdelbaset al-Megrahi of 1989 terror attack backed by court

Scotland’s most senior judges have upheld a secrecy order signed by UK foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, to withhold intelligence documents believed to implicate a Palestinian terror group in the Lockerbie bombing.
Lawyers acting for the family of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the Libyan convicted of the bombing, believe the documents are central to a fresh appeal against his conviction which starts on Tuesday and had urged the court to release them.
