TALLAHASSEE - A plan that would turn Florida tribal casinos into mini-versions of the Las Vegas strip passed out of the Senate Regulated Industries Committee today with virtually no debate and scant opposition.

The Senate plan would give the Seminole tribe full-fledged casinos, adding craps and roulette to its current gaming roster of no-limit poker, blackjack, baccarat and slots. And gambling would flourish on non-tribal lands, too, with blackjack tables at South Florida racetracks and slots-like video-lottery games elsewhere in the state.

"We're going to allow both our existing pari-mutuels and the Seminole tribe, hopefully, to be very, very prosperous in the future and we're going to benefit from that," said Sen. Dennis Jones, R-Seminole, who chairs Regulated Industries.

He added the bill would make Florida a "tourist destination for gaming. And let's face it: We're already a gaming state. With the lottery, with cruises to nowhere, with pari-mutuels that have been here for 75 years, don't kid yourself: We're a gaming state. So why wouldn't you want to become the cream of the crop?"

Hey that's awesome! The Florida Seminoles is one of our biggest clients, and I'm just working on a progressive parimutuel prize feature to be rolled out later this year. Keep the cash flowing! :)

Any easter eggs in that code :) I could use a little extra money.

Minnesota, like most other states, is negative financially. Now this is illegal. Republicans have proposed gambling run by the state to take up this debt. Well, also to ensure they can buy a new Football Stadium for their friend. The gambling we have are Native American Casinos.

Republicans like socialism if it off sets a minority controlled business. Republicans still like socialism for the wealthy. WHYZZAT?

In Florida the bulk of gambling was not pushed by Republicans, rather Republicans tried to block it. The tribes are their own entity. Jeb Bush was against Broward County Parimutuals getting slots, but once voters passed the bill he bent to the will of the people.

Me? I have mixed feelings on the whole thing. I have nothing against gambling being legal, but I think if it is legal it should be legal for all businesses. The Indians are a special case for another thread, but the parimutuals are a handful of owners who reap all the benefit. Why should it be legal only for a couple people?

That's a good question. Do we legalize and have a 'sin tax' or do we have the government own the sins?

I think the question here is bigger than this thread. What and why should be the relationship of the Native Americans to the USA. Should we enable their culture to survive? How would it be best to do that? Would the culture of a few million survive against the culture of 1/3 billion without some sort of help from the 1/3 billion?
