Best site I've seen yet, gives you map with exact locations. Just click on the box and a popup will give you the scumbag's info.

Cool!
There's just that little thing about personal integrity, and the fact that sex offenders that fall back into crime often do so away from their home area... |

Yay...
Vigilantes are going to love that site. too bad if the wrong person gets caught... Happened over here several times when the papers released information on various paedophiles a few years back. _________________ Regards,

I have such a problem with this...
I agree that we have a big problem with sexual crimes, and the people who commit them, but... The way the law is written, no matter what the crime, if you end up on that list, your only way to EVER get away from that history is to either commit suicide, or leave the US. I agree that such crimes, particularly against children are heinous, but what happens after the individual has served his time, and is honestly trying to change his ways, or has gotten the appropriate help and no longer serves any threat whatsoever?
All sites like this serve is for making sure that people like that never have the opportunity to change for the better, and for vigilantes who are seeking revenge.

I'm not exactly sure how this can aid in the protection of your children. As far as I know, parents must always be on guard - even if there are no registered sex offenders in the area. At worst, this site may give some parents a false sense of security while others may freak out and virtually imprison their kids their own home in an attempt to shelter them. And this does absolutely nothing to help those kids who are abused by family members. _________________ “In Kazakhstan we say, ‘God, man, horse, dog, then woman, then rat, then small krutzouli.’” - Borat Sagdiyev |

There ya go.
See? I'm not sure how this helps anyone either, except to spread paranoia and make it certain that no matter where someone -- who has made a mistake and paid their time for it -- lives, they are constantly hounded, harrassed, and made to feel as though they would be better off if they moved "somewhere else". Only problem is, there is no "somewhere else" where some rabid busybody wouldn't go running around the entire neighborhood spreading all kinds of hate towards the "pervert" just because they ended up on that list.
Not even to think about how easy it is to end up screwed for life either.
If, for example, an 18 year old highschool senior goes out (and has sex with) with a 16 year old sophomore (which happens ALL the time here) and the parents don't approve, charges of statutory rape get filed... Bang, zip, zoom, the guy could be labelled a sex offender for the rest of his life, for what? Falling in love with someone below the arbitrary age of 18? Perhaps an extreme example, perhaps not, but it does in fact happen.

| It also stirs up the 'I have to defend myself' attitude, stirs up agression, indirectly. |

| Sorry guys, I am all for this freedom of information. A look through my area does not show a single person fitting the extreme example posted here. What it does show is a bunch of sexual battery against minor under age of 16, sexual battery against minor under age of 12 and using the internet to solicit sex from a minor under the age of 12 etc. Sick bastards that shouldn't out in society in the first place. The reason we have this easy freedom of information is because in the past people weren't informed, and these sickos would continue to prey on their unsuspecting victims, in many cases escalating to murder. |

I would politely disagree. What that map shows isn't people who will commit crimes, what it shows is people who have already been committed of a crime and served the time as allotted by LAW.. In no way does that map represent anything except an excuse for hate crimes against those who've already served what the law requires, and in most cases gotten help. If you feel that this is inadequate, and you seem to, then don't fight to punish those beyond their sentence, fight to change the laws to be much stricter in the first place.
If you honestly feel that "once a sick bastard, always a sick bastard" why don't you fight to keep them in jail forever, or to simply kill them on the spot (which is what things are coming to)?
The map does not in any way show the much greater number of predators out there (who simply haven't yet found the opportunity) who actually pose a risk to children, it simply displays a map of those who've gotten caught so that others can continually keep them from EVER getting past it.
To better see my point, apply the same "map of shame" to those who write bad checks. Does writing a bad check mean that you should forever be known as a "bad check writer"? Yes... I agree. It's an absurd example I know, but either all people deserve a second chance, or no one ever does. Not being a sexual predator, I wouldn't know for a fact, but I have to believe that everyone can change given enough help and the desire to do so.
I know that map is replete with hundreds of examples to the contrary, but I would tend to believe that most of these instances are far more a matter of circumstance, temptation, and ample opportunity than "pure evil".
If I'm wrong about humanity, that makes the death penalty (without 12 years of appeals) the only reasonable option.

There are some places that label a person a "sex offender" if he does a prank like moon a neighbor.
I mean, it's not the sort of thing i've ever done - that seems to be the kind of semi-drunken behavior that teenage boys enjoy.
But it's also incredibly harmless.
and it certainly isn't something that a person should be hounded the rest of their lives about.
In big cities like NY, intelligent family members teach the kids how to be "Street Smart".
You can't prevent every problem, but being alert and able to size up people will keep kids safer than some web site info (or miss-info).
And I speak from experience. _________________ Political correctness is the language of cowards - Billy Connelly

The site is less then complete. For example, I can't look up the sexual predators that live in Intercourse. http://www.800padutch.com/intercs.shtml
But, in all seriousness I agree with Wayne. The people listed have served their time to the state for the crimes of which they were convicted. Recidivism rates, like any study, have difficulties but it may be that recidivism rates for sexual crimes may be below the rates for other violent crimes. If that's the case then such lists are truly fueled by hatred, fear, and misunderstanding. YES we all want to protect our children but also these people have done their time and deserve to be as seemlessly integrated back into society. IF they reoffend then I'm all for locking them away for much longer or for good. |
