If there is any fairness left in this world, your employer will drop your ass from company paid insurance and let you fend for yourself.
You'e right, he should have just included the medical insurance fees into income taxes so that if you refuse to pay them you'd be thrown in jail. That's real socialism and that's better then the crap system you have now that no one else on the planet wants.

Yay! More welfare for the corporations. Wow - the financial industry owns the USA (even though they are so competent). It's just more Bush - but browner.

...
edit:
After a little thought - this seems to be an interesting opening move.

well, as someone with no regular income and certainly can't afford paying insurance...how does this affect me?

The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties.
ok, sounds fine.

The legislation would exempt certain hardship cases from fines. The fines would be collected through the income tax system.
sounds like me.

of course, I always knew I could never afford medical attention. I spent my adulthood keeping myself as healthy as possible. I've never taken any welfare or anything from the government. I'd rather be dead than in debt.

but that's me.

Though when push comes to shove I think most people would choose debt. Recent numbers are ~60% of all bankrupcies have a unexpected medical cause. The # of these are rising even for people who have insurance.

The other thing unmentioned here is the related plan to create the government's own insurance system. It will enter the market at a lower price than the companies. I see this as a boom for the insurance companies, unfortunately. They would now encourage companies to carry their insurance and the government insurance. Then they'll encourage companies to dump the sick off on the government. This will allow them to charge high rates of insurance for those who simply won't use it, read reap the profits.

IMO it is a moral travisty that the head of a healthcare insurance company is one of the wealthiest men in my state.
