Thousands of years after the first athletes competed at the ancient stadium in Greece, a high priestess swathed in white lit a flame from the sun to mark the start of a new Olympiad on Thursday.

I love all that ancient pagan stuff.

The 2012 Olympics in London better be flawless as the British press did a good hatchet job on the 2004 Greek Olympics BEFORE they opened, costing Greece huge in lost sales. The Brits ate their words afterwards, but that doesn't pay the bills.

I suspect that at least one or two of those priestesses aren't quite as pure as they're supposed to be.
Being pure might be part of the job description, but not necessarily part of the hiring process. ;)

Hestia is the eldest daughter of the Titans Rhea and Kronus, and sister to Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades. Kronus ate Poseidon, Hades and Hestia, but Zeus forced Kronus to regurgitate them. Hestia asked Zeus to be the goddess of the hearth, and she kept the hearth lit at Mount Olympus.

Hestia was one of three goddesses immune to the influence of Aphrodite. She could not be forced to love anyone.

Though she was courted by Poseidon and Apollo, Hestia chose to remain a virgin.
