Some people forget and most never knew that Afghanistan was aspiring to western modernity before we started encouraging the Taliban. In the 50s Afghanistan was looking for help to modernize. We said no, so they asked the Soviets and the Soviets said yes.
In the 50s Iran was a modernizing westernizing democratic nation but they made the "mistake" of electing a man who thought that the oil under Iran belonged to Iran - so we put in the Shah as a brutal dictator to set the record straight which lead to the equally nasty theocracy that replaced the hated Shah.
Egypt and Nasser. Same thing.

Most forget that Afghanistan was concurred by the British and any apparent aspirations for Western modernity were only echos of that. Most of our problems today stem from that.

Ironically, the Taliban took a photo of the Buddhas destruction using a camera most likely made by Buddhists. Who said the Taliban doesn't have a sense of humor? Oh those wacky religious extremists.

Since the Taliban want to return to the 7th century, they need to start by issuing a fatwa against having AK-47's and dynamite

Next it's the pyramids!

Kabul today:

war-bergen_153597119.jpg

Peter Bergen says: Afghanistan is much better off today

As a result of the U.S.-led occupation of Afghanistan and the enterprising spirit of the Afghans themselves, Kabul is now rebuilt, the villagers are back, and the once-ubiquitous de-miners have all but disappeared. Furthermore, millions of Afghans have voted with their feet: Since the fall of the Taliban, more than 5 million have returned home. By way of contrast, some 2 million Iraqis left their country during the recent war there. Only a tiny fraction of those refugees has gone back.
