Thirty-five ago today, snowflakes briefly dusted palm trees, windshields and people from Miami to West Palm Beach — a freak but brief winter wonderland and the only South Florida snowfall on record in the 20th century.

Winter 2009-2010 it snowed as far south as Oakland Park (aka Fort Lauderdale), but not quite to Miami. That was only light flurries and it was not officially recognized, despite users posting Youtube videos. It was recognized for Orlando and Naples, but those are not considered "South Florida" for some reason.

I was living up in New Smyrna Beach at the time and remember it started to snow up there about 11pm. I was sick and wasn't allowed to go out side and touch the stuff. I remember watching the 11PM news out of Orlando showing a snowball fight from snow being scooped off of gas pumps at a gas station. I do remember it getting down to 18F one night a year or two later, there was ice floating in the ICW just south of the Ponce de Leon Inlet. Ah the days of Global Cooling!
