A different look at Detroit.

Well, I'm not really sure it's all that different a look at Detroit. It highlighted the usual abandoned structures, forgotten areas, and complete lack of order.

Sure, you can spin that as a great opportunity. It's not so much by design, as it is by a lack of anyone to tell you "No." The flipside, of course, is that legitimate operations have a tough go, as there's also no one to say "Yes." Stuff happens because people just show up and do it. There's no approval process to painting a giant mural. You just show up with paint. The people that take care of the old train station grounds? I think they actually still "break in" to do that, too. Tyree's Heidelberg project is not official. The only reason it's still there because the city is too broke to pay bulldozer drivers to flatten it.

Johnny Knoxville was actually close to astute when he said it's a DIY town; it's more of a self-initiative town.
