A Town Creates Its Own Department Store

In a recent analysis of nearly 3,000 rural and urban areas across the United States, a pair of Pennsylvania State University economists found that the areas with more small, locally owned businesses (with fewer than 100 employees) had greater per capita income growth over the period from 2000 to 2007, while the presence of larger, nonlocal firms depressed economic growth.

And how often have I said that local business (the middle class) are the REAL job creators, not the motherf*cking rich???

Obama didn't kill the Gulf of Mexico oil business. If anyone did it was BP - however, permits and exploration are proceeding. The greenies are the ones who should feel betrayed. The volatile price of energy is partly due to frequent wars in the oil producing regions (at the behest of the oil companies) and blatant price collusion of the oil producers and refiners and the activities of Wall St. speculators.

And regulations aren't the problem. When regulations are bad (because they favour large business and make it hard for small businesses to comply and compete) they tend to be written by big business partly for that reason. That's not an Obama problem only since the last president and the one before and the one before suffered the same problem and presidents don't make the regulations. And an unenforced regulation is not a regulation at all so companies that can get enforcers to look the other way can thrive while honest smaller players get reamed in the market by the cheats.

What Obama should do, to reduce the "uncertainty", is to take command and ensure that the regulatory agencies get cleaned out of incompetents and that the big Wall St companies that made the financial mess get properly prosecuted, put people in jail, split the institutions into safe, functioning institutions again and bring the hammer down on all the other big companies that out cheat the little guys.
