More than 24 million Chinese men of marrying age could find themselves without spouses in 2020, state media reported on Monday, citing a study that blamed sex-specific abortions as a major factor.

The study, by the government-backed Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, named the gender imbalance among newborns as the most serious demographic problem for the country's population of 1.3 billion, the Global Times said.

"Sex-specific abortions remained extremely commonplace, especially in rural areas," where the cultural preference for boys over girls is strongest, the study said, while noting the reasons for the gender imbalance were "complex."

And it gets worse...

The Global Times said abductions and trafficking of women were "rampant" in areas with excess numbers of men, citing the National Population and Family Planning Commission.

Illegal marriages and forced prostitution were also problems in those areas, it said.

Is the USA conducting some kind of population control? That would be odd. It turns out that the more developed a nation gets the lower the birth rate goes. Some countries like Greece have such a low birth rate that the population is expected to shrink. I would expect the US to actually encourage a higher birth rate. Choosing to not educate kids about safe sex is a good way to keep the birth rates high.

Sorry, I don't see the problem.
The same is either happening or bound to happen in India soon too. They have the same sort of preference for males and have been "getting rid" of their girls for a while now.

I've been talking about this on and off for twenty years and the outcome is not surprising. Human reproduction is limited by the number of females. Falling female population means falling population generally and it isn't such a bad thing for China and India.

It also means increased male on male competition which will generally favour the wealthy and better educated (though it also favours the most ruthless and rugged). Competition is annealing.

Then as women become rarer there will come a time when demand rises enough that dowery traditions need to be waived. It will probably negatively impact female education though - but don't forget, life is tougher for most parts of the world where it's a case of pick the suffering you'd prefer instead of our soft wide-screen-cheetos-fluffy-pillow lifestyle.

I foresee a lot of Chinese guys jacking off

and lowering the population is very much a good thing
