...I still think the Amiga was the best computer ever built. I've used Windows, Mac, Unix/Linux and even Android, none of them are as cool as the Amiga. It's a damn shame it died so young.

This revelation came to me while running the "cd" command on a Solaris xterm (ksh). Why do I need to type "cd" before a directory name? Why not just type in the directory name and have the shell take me there? The Amiga did that! *sigh*

I still run my uA1 from time to time. Was on it quite a lot until recently when something went funny with the network connection. (Still have several other of the original models too). Boot time negligible, shutdown time none. Snappy response to user input, still find it a pleasant experience. Just have never found that "feel" on any of my other systems and we have mac, various windows, ubuntu flavours, and Android. iOS is pretty good though in terms of general responsiveness and doing what you expect it to do (OK, I'm speaking for myself here).

Quite unprecedented, I'm sure.

Isn't that bound to PPC?

It is for now and the near future. If you want the closest thing to a modern "Amiga", MorphOS is your way to go in my opinion. I got a PowerMac G5 2x2.7Ghz model for $145 shipped. The MorphOS key for this model is ~$150. Even with MorphOS only using one core, this system flies and I paid less than $300. MorphOS even flirts with being a true modern system. OWB Web browser is very , very nice. My system even plays 1080p videos (most codecs full speed). If PowerMac G5 isn't your speed, there are 73 low cost systems available for MorphOS.

There is talk of MorphOS moving to another platform down the road, either Arm or X86-64. It won't happen over the next several years and when it does move likely say goodbye to any Amiga software compatability. For me the current MorphOS 3.2 release is the beginning of the golden years of MorphOS. It is running the very fastest and very last PPC ever made or ever will be made, AND it is Amiga compatible.

I wouldn't count on that. AOS4 has petunia and I'm sure MorphOS has a 68k emulator in it too for OS complient programs - and UAE runs things with custom chip bit banging. Carrying emulation over would maintain a high degree of Amiga compatibility (since the stuff written for 68k till outweighs PPC, I'm pretty sure). Not sure what approach AROS has - if they support 68k stuff (I guess I could google but I have a more urgent need to lean the gutters - damn ever greens shed the whole year round).

Adding another emulation shouldn't be too daunting.

Lol!

Whilst Amiga will always have a special place in my coal black heart, I have to say my all time favourite OS is BeOS/Zeta. To me it felt like someone had taken all the best bits from all the other desktop OS's and crammed them together into one beautifully efficient and elegant package. Going from AmigaOS to BeOS in I think late 2003 was a startling revelation.

I like Elive with its Enlightenment 17 environment too, it's certainly as snappy as BeOS was, but not quite the same.

BeOS was definitely a marmite OS though.
