I just saw this movie last night.
Agora at imdb.
This movie contains violence that's not suitable for children but it is also a pretty rich and complex movie with many themes woven together. We have the rise of a new religion, death throes of an old religion, the poverty and radicalism of the street against the intellectualism of the politically unaware ivory tower elite thinkers and the more pragmatic approach of the empire and its representatives.
The story revolves around Hypatia, daughter of Theon, librarian of Alexandria and fictionalizes and speculates about how close she may have come to the shape of the cosmos in the last few years of light before the closing in of the dark ages.
As I said before, it is a complex movie and there are many avenues of thought that could be explored branching from this tapestry but I don't intend to speak on any of these here - that would be a rather dry exercise - the film speaks more eloquently.
It's been out for a while now but doesn't seem to have been well publicized. I only discovered it by accident while searching for something else though I am glad I did. It may have already passed your area by but if you can find it, go see it.
