Iran's Ahmadinejad: Sept. 11 attacks a 'big lie'
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100306/ap_ ... ea/ml_iran

"September 11 was a big lie and a pretext for the war on terror and a prelude to invading Afghanistan," Ahmadinejad was quoted as saying by state TV. He called the attacks a "complicated intelligence scenario and act."

The Iranian president has questioned the official U.S. version of the Sept. 11 attacks before, but this is the first time he ventured to label it a "big lie."

He has grown a giant moustache?

Oh, the 9/11 thing. You know that's not really a terribly controversial opinion throughout large parts of the world.

Neither is the opinion that the moon landing was faked. Do you think the moon landing was faked?

Liars believe everyone's a liar. Criminals believe everyone's a criminal. Ahmadinejad is just exposing his own character flaws.

It would be very difficult to keep fake moon landings a secret. On the other hand it would be very easy to pull off the total collapse of security systems that would allow a 9/11 to occur (less so now as many more agencies and agents are on alert for such things but before it happened they were much more prone to simply follow the orders that they received in good faith).

Bureaucracy is a big machine. All big machines have points of weakness. If you cut the brake lines on someones car and they died and you were fingered as a suspect it would be unconvincing to argue that the sabotage theory was unreasonable because if it were true then every single mechanical component of the car should show signs of sabotage.

However, some agencies do nothing but keep secrets and do unsavoury things completely in the dark. Think Iran/Contra. Even when it fell apart ranks closed up and key players, by taking one for the team, ended up doing quite well for themselves.

It is easier to keep secrets when a group are complicit in crimes (think the Mob, think Hell's Angels, think any organized crime) because anyone talking is a) admitting that they are crooks, b) getting themselves killed. Anyone keeping their mouth shut is demonstrating loyalty and will be rewarded.

All the people who should have been fired over their failures on 911 have done alright out of it. All the whistle-blowers are buried in red tape and gag orders and have no careers.

Everyone is quite happy to believe that governments lie, just so long as the lies are small. They will not believe that a big lie is a lie because it would be too disruptive to their world view to accept it. Many people go to their graves believing that there is a God because they cannot understand why anyone would ever lie to them by telling them something so profoundly outrageous - and once you believe it, it is very difficult to let it go even when you know it makes no sense.

I agree completely. Many Iranians have been so well brainwashed that it's now easy for them to believe all the evils in the world are caused by either the US or Israel (or both usually). Ahmadinejad simply perpetuates this, and like any good religious preacher, offers nothing in terms of hard evidence. I imagine there's growing tensions at home for him to be falling back on ultra nationalist tactics like some 3rd rate dictator. Or perhaps he suspects Israel is close to conducting a bombing raid and he wants to say "see, I told you they want to kill us". Or just as likely, maybe he wants Israel to bomb his country so he can cash in on all that anti-Israel hate he's been spewing for the last few years. How wonderfully prophetic that would be.
