Armed Somali group al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack and ongoing siege of an upscale shopping mall in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi that has left at least 39 people dead and 150 injured.

Kenyan security forces have arrested one of the gunmen who attacked the mall on Saturday, the Kenyan presidency said on Twitter. Gunmen are still holding an unknown number of hostages inside the mall.

The east African country's head of police, David Kimaiyo, said via Twitter that several other assailants had been pinned down after soldiers and police moved into the mall to hunt down the attackers.

If what I've read is correct, this attack is just one of several that have occurred in retaliation to Kenya's sending troops into Somalia. Seems Al Shabab has been feeling the squeeze somewhat since the AU put some effort in to trying to unfuck that country.

sigh.....call me crazy but I'll never understand how killing solves anything

OK, you're crazy. :P

Sometimes people are so dangerous to others that the only way to protect the wider world is to off them.

Any number of African dictators would likely make good examples.

The AU is not to be tolerated. A whole continent as rich as Africa, once united, could potentially entertain notions of emancipation. Fortunately we have decapitated the AU by getting rid of a major financier, Gaddafi, and absconding with the material which he hoped to base a new Pan African currency on - coincidentally also denoted Au.

Was in the supermarket a bit earlier and spotted the front page of some of the newspapers, it would appear that the person who organised this butchery was a white convert who was born, raised and living over here in the UK. Better yet, in these trying times of sexual equality, this suspect is a woman,

Not exactly what I was expecting.

Does she work for MI6?

Na. I'm a solid KGB volunteer. Ask Mike.

But it seems like there were a lot of Americans involved too. I saw a story about that go by in the newsfeed here too. Mind you, there's nothing that says a violent armed group of ex-pats can't be the legitimate voice of the locals. You can ask Mike about that too.

I saw on Reddit several mentions of Minnesota, does that tally with what you saw?

A group that specifically targets the young, the disenfranchised, the angry. If it weren't for all the killings I'd consider such deliberate targeting and subsequent conditioning to be the actions of a cult.

Daily Mail lionising "British Hero" for exploits in "Johnny-foreigner land"?

Shockerooni.

So it turns out the "folks should have guns" argument has merit (so long as it's in a brown country and the folks with guns are white).
Or maybe he got lucky or maybe it's because he's a trained soldier that has perhaps experienced being shot at and can keep calm under stress. In such a situation, training and experience is probably more useful than the actual weapon.
