Alabama is short on illegals

at least with the new rules labor wanted to implement at least children won't be part of the back breaking harvest... oh yeah... that got stopped didnt it...? to the fields you child beggars!!

With 22+M unemployed in the US, I guess the farmers won't pay enough to hire those unemployed?

you are aware of the fact that there is a reason why those jobs are done by illegals predominately?

Did you follow the story last year? The farmers were not able to get enough Americans to do the work and the American labour was not skilled enough or hard working enough to get the job done.

Seeing as the farmers would need to follow minimum wage and tax laws instead of hiding thei illegal transactions you appear to be spot on

Win-Win!

Less illegal immigrants
less tax evasion
More cotton and Peanuts harvested by machine

Want the real skinny on Alabama tomato farmers.

Tomatoes are the most easily grown fruit in Alabama. Everybody grows them, kids to adults, rich and poor and everybody in between, from March to November. In garden plots, in flower gardens, in hanging baskets, and pots on the front porch. Even window sills, and backyard green houses in cold weather. So much are grown, that they are almost free when they come in season. All your neighbors have extra, and give them away just to avoid throwing them away. Sure, there will be some in the grocery store, but they won't be very good compared to the ones home grown.

No self respecting Southerner would eat a green one unless it was fried, (a southern dish.) or someone with cabin fever in January or February.Try eating one on a Big Mac; terrible.

So who grows tomatoes as a cash crop?
They are mostly grown by Yankee interlopers or other folks that don't know any better. People that wouldn't know a good tomato if it smacked them right in the mouth. Tomatoes are a crop that is picked multiple times, so mechanical picking is out of the question as it would destroy the plant.

Even if you only paid minimum wage for pickers, you are going to go broke raising tomatoes as a cash crop unless you ship them back up to Yankee land where they don't know the difference. In order to ship tomatoes they have to be picked green. That is why tomatoes are a poor crop to try to make a living from, farming in Alabama.

Yum yum. Cotton.

BTW, people who can't afford food don't make up for it by stocking up on cotton.
In India Cotton seeds are eaten and are rich in vitamins, Cotton seed oil is used for cooking also processed for margarine

Not even starving people in India think canola oil is edible. Canola oil is a pretty good engine oil though.

Someone who has a greenhouse and can grow them for "out of season" delivery = $$$

I agree, anyone with a window and a hanging basket can raise tomatoes

part of the reason the market sucks for tomatoes is the increase in growing information available to the general joe or joan... you can grow tomatoes hydroponically much more effectively and feed them only the nutrients they need. the rise in organic farming has also hurt.... i grow my own on three seperate places so i dont have that issue... knowing how to can, keeps me in garden goodies most of the year depending on christmas generosities....

Don't tomatoes grow everywhere? Here in Minnesota they are easily raiseable in a garden. The stores are typically gassed to make them red. Eateries are typically worse. So we grow our own and get some from the Organic Farm membership. So this idea that they're southern only is half-baked.

If money can't be made with tomatoes following the laws then the market shouldn't grow them. If everyone is growing for themselves then great then let the grow your own take care of it. Instead the farmers should focus on crops where it's easier to make money. Afterall they are businessmen.

you're going to get many, many more growing them in the south, longer growing season
Here in Texas you get 2 vegetable crops a year, one spring, one fall (summer is too hot for vegetables)

Correct, they should be growing crops to turn into biofuel
need more research on GMO biofuel crops
