What happens when you tell people the sorts of things their governments are doing covertly with their money? Well, it seems that they hate you. The boss may be stealing from the company and raping the employees etc. etc. etc. but even though he's a total bastard the thing that people really can't stand is disloyalty to the boss. There is some interesting human psychology to that and it works on many scales. If you identify with a group you will excuse almost any bad behaviour of another group member ... almost. However, even if your group member is committing acts the group thinks are morally and criminally wrong, they will still back the group member over someone who is exposing that group member's behaviour especially if they think that members of other groups are listening.
Think of all the preachers that have been shown to be so much less than godly and yet the congregations are ready to take them back and forgive them and resume sending in offerings rather than see them as the rest of the world sees them. The crooks are just doing what they gotta do to take care of business, but everyone hates a rat.
Otis Pike took on the intelligence services while Bush Sr was CIA director. Pike got destroyed and the voters were happy to agree. Leaking to the press didn't get any play and left Pike looking worse than the intelligence agencies.
