amiga.org down for upgrades?

I'm no webdev, but my knowledge of server migration is quite vast and this just reeks of "NFI". I know Karlos was quite prominent on the site still and he contributed quite a lot to the migration of a.org from Xoops to vBulletin, but knowing him like I do, I doubt he's had any part of this change as there is no way he'd let the site go down for such a long time.
I hadn't even considered the idea that Karlos might still be around. Good man if he is, but that's been what... a decade?

I'm just surprised, and the longer this goes on without an update, the more it feels like a Moobunny/John Shepard situation.

I'm guessing it's at least partly to do with complying with the new GDPR regulations.
We've run into a few issues in my work implementing code for this and things have often taken much longer than expected.
Having said all that, this is dragging on even longer than could be reasonably expected for even unforeseen, delay-causing issues.

Possible, especially if they're going the "Amiga route" (which is to say the "custom, but most difficult way possible") but most packages, including the newest Xenforo and vBulletin have the new GDPR stuff built in automatically upon the update.

I haven't updated either this site, nor my others in over a year. I should probably get on that...

The value of amiga.org was its name and logo. It is no accident that Amigakit's "Enhancer Package" prominently features the "amiga.org" logo (rather than the official "Amiga" branding), which they acquired along with the website.

Hmm. Good point. I never considered that Amiga.org had it's own branding, and that would be a valuable thing. But that was one of the few updates I did note when I logged in back before they shut it down, was referencing that Amiga.org was a registered trademark.

Update:
Essential Server Work
24 June 2018

We apologise for the continuing downtime of the Amiga.org forums and some other Amiga.org services.

We are still working on the server migration for several other important sites that we operate including this one. Due to recent time constraints and work load pressures, we have not been able to afford as much time as we hoped to the work. Some other website work has overrun adversely affecting the schedule. Please check back here for more information soon as we progress with this upgrade work.

I saw that yesterday. Posted only because people on their facebook page were starting to rebel.

I'm not surprised; when your site's main attraction is facilitating conversation between members, how long can go on not providing that service before you lose those members forever.
For all the user numbers probably aren't great these days, I'd expect this fiasco to deplete them further.

amigaworld.net is the only Amiga place left I visit these days and even then it's about once a week for a five minute browse.

Morphzone is a better alternative, even talking classic Amiga stuff. MZ while mostly focused on MorphOS is run independently while AWN is a corporate A-Eonkit site.

*sniff* *sniff* You smell that? Yup, that's a big pile of bull**** right there :lol::lol:

well, I just checked and I can still log into amiga.org - even though it's "working".

Yeah, you can log in. Can't get to anything like forums or PM or anything, though. I wonder when it's safe to say it's dead? Been well over a month. It's a shame. There was a lot of good info there. Of course, it was buried in with over a decade of wreckage, too, though.

Meanwhile, anyone have any idea what's going on at Amiga.com?

Looks like McBill let the domain expire and it was picked up by someone else?

I don't think so. Looking over history, it looks like it is owned by the same anonymous proxy as it was. And pointed at a parking service, but not using real parking, just a placeholder html.

In that HTML contains a comment:
<!-- Rirel 33 lrnef... -->

Through ROT13, that reads "Every 33 Years..."

Searching on that, I found a post at a place I won't specify in which some people were speculating that the Amiga 1000 was introduced almost 33 years ago. (July 23rd, 1985)

So, sounds like this is probably some intentional thing or another.

As I understand it, the forum software is being migrated. To what, I couldn't say, but possibly something bespoke. It was supposed to take around 7-10 days back in May but you know what software estimates are like.

I've not been involved with this migration or any technical aspects of the site since the new owners took over. My last technical contribution was the old browser proxy: https://github.com/0xABADCAFE/aoproxy

They killed Amiga.org? What a bunch of wankers (to use a very British phrase). Sure I didn't go there so much when it became an AmigaKit shill site, but it holds so many happy memories for me. RIP

Don't give up hope just yet.

Looking at the post and topic counts, it seems they've carried the old content across. Here's hoping...

Yeah looks like they're some activity finally. I think I was a bit upset when I ranted above. As well as it being a great place to hang out way back when there is so much historical knowledge on that site, glad it won't be lost
