"Hacktivist" collective Anonymous on Thursday took credit for taking down U.S. Department of Justice, FBI and entertainment company websites, following arrests in one of the federal government's largest anti-piracy crackdowns.

I hope this anon attack doesn't reverse progress made by the blackout. Anon's tactic isn't a bad one, but it's timing is a bit off here. MegaUpload isn't something most people will care about, or at least, not on the same level as SOPA/PIPA.

But the MegaUpload take down was also timed at an interesting time. Anon's take is that it's the feds sending a signal that they can do what they want. But, another way to look at it is that SOPA/PIPA are not needed because we already have a system to take down copyright infringers. That perspective could help push SOPA/PIPA over the edge. Unfortunately, the Anon attack is deflecting attention away from that little fact.

The US can tell New Zealand to arrest people for running a site that other people can use for sending movies to each other. Scary enough. Why haven't gmail and hotmail been shut down? And SkyDrive and all the new "cloud" services?

If they have any servers that are hosted in the USA, apparently, yes, the US can do that. Fun, huh? And, of course, Gmail, Hotmail, and the more well known "clouds" haven't been attacked because they are established enough that they'd deliver the legal smackdown that the content mafia deserves.
