The governor of Oklahoma is considering tough new abortion bills that would allow doctors to withhold test results showing foetal defects and require women to answer intrusive questions.

The results of the questionnaires would be posted online.

Women would also be required to have a vaginal ultrasound and listen to a detailed description of the embryo or foetus in a third bill passed by the legislature on Monday.

Full story here.

I'm guessing whoever thought this bill up has no concept of patient confidentiality or in fact any sense of ethics.

I'm also not aware of the medical justification for mandatory vaginal ultrasounds - which are used only for very specific things and with the exception of ectopic pregnancy (which would likely get picked up by regular ultrasound scans anyway) is not otherwise required in a normal pregnancy. Quite frankly it smacks of state sponsored rape.

wow!
just looking at the language it feels like whoever wrote that HATES women!

Oklahoma is not one state I'm ever going to visit.

Oklahoma isn't a bad state in and of itself. Obviously they have got some idiot politicians who are looking to score "points" for an upcoming election. They are clearly pandering to (I presume) a religious base.

I cannot see this bill (if enacted into state law) surviving a court challenge. Aside from the obvious HIPPA issues, this could easily be challenged on privacy grounds, especially posting medical data online! What a bunch of shallow morons.

Just today we've had the head of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland, cardinal Keith O'Brien issuing an instruction to it's followers, basically telling them to only vote for anti-abortion (among other things) parties.

Then again, even most of Scotland's catholics think O'Brien's off his nut. I tend to agree with them.

sorry if I made it sound like I "hate" everyone in Oklahoma. I'm sure it's a beautiful place. it inspired a musical after all.

it's like Kansas when some idiots tried to ruin their children's future and education by trying to make them think creationalism is real and evolution is not. a few loons roaming the streets makes me nervous.

I just hope the rational people can gain control over the situation over there.

Fundamentalism does not respect political parties. Even if he was a dyed in the wool socialist (in the European sense of the word) I would have put this up and those that commented here would have said much as they did.

You'll note Fade, that not one other person in this thread tried to make this an issue of party politics. That's because it isn't.
