52-year-old convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell Tuesday.Castro was being held at the Correction Reception Center in Orient, OH in Pickaway County.
He was sentenced August 1 to life in prison, plus 1,000 years, for kidnapping and sexually assaulting Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus while holding them captive in his Seymour Avenue house for over a decade.
Ohio State Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating the death.
JoEllen Smith, of the Ohio Department of Corrections, sent 19 Action News this statement:
Inmate Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 pm at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals. Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation.

Just noticed his sentence. Life in prison plus 1,000 years? So do they keep his rotting corpse lying in the cell for another 1,000 years?

the standard, back in the day, was a in the case of a life sentence your body was taken from the prison on that day and returned to the family. a life plus sentence got you an extra three days in the prison morgue.

Life sentence does not literally mean life. Someone close to me used to be career law enforcement and he'd say "life sentence means 7 years". That is why you will often see "life without the possibility of parole" or life + some obscene number of years. It is the only way to ensure they aren't released due to overcrowding or reduced due to misguided liberal pressure.

At least "without the possibility of parole" actually makes sense. Plus one thousand years is idiotic.

I'd prefer it with assistance for a scumbag like that, maybe similar to what happened to Jeffrey Dahlmer.

whenever people die in custody it looks specious at best... funny you mention dahmer... my brother was fixing large scale printing presses and he went to the prison where dahmer died, of course after he died... rumours say it was allowed to happen...
