Bert and Ernie are totally gay. Come on—you know it, I know it. We’re pretty sure even Big Bird knows it.
Despite a 2011 official announcement from
Sesame Street that the “roommates” are nothing more than friends and have no sexual orientation whatsoever, everyone has always known they’re absolutely gay. And that’s okay. In fact, it’s better than okay since the
U.S. Supreme Court ruled that DOMA is dead and Prop 8 is an idea so ludicrous, its case was dismissed entirely.

Jack Hunter submitted this rendering of what may be the nation’s most beloved couple ever embracing on a couch. Hunter reportedly posted the image on Tumblr, but
The New Yorker picked it up and made it this week’s historic cover, calling it, “Bert and Ernie’s Moment of Joy.”
For all the catastrophizers who surmised that lifting bans on gay marriage would lead to Armageddon, let this serve as an example: This is about as “bad” as it’s going to get. More folks will be able to love each other and they’ll be able to show that love without shame. The End.
