Big Quake in the Pacific Northwest

The current best estimate for big quake risk is about 37% for an 8.5+ in the next 50 years and 10% to 15% of a 9+ in the same time. Those are some pretty big quakes and they make some pretty big waves so if you are in a low lying area and you haven't yet been killed by a building falling on you then there's still the tsunami to worry about.

Nobody can say exactly when the next big quake will come, but we have been able to say when the last quake was with pretty impressive accuracy considering it was over 300 years ago and only oral cultures were around in the area at that time.

So how can we be so sure about the date and time of the quake?
