Just stumbled across this tidbit from nationalpolicyinstitute.org which points out that Caucasian teenagers are specifically excluded from the Gates Millennium Scholarship fund.

“Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they: Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American;”

It's interesting to me to note that racism is alive and well, even with one of the richest men in the world..

I never did like Bill Gates, now I remember why.

Well, I'm sure what he's trying to accomplish is to set out a framework that helps the kids that need it the most. But it is completely wrong-headed to even consider that this might be accomplished by looking at a color or nationality. It's appalling that this kind of thing is still viewed as acceptable by anyone. It just throws fuel into racial fires.

I agree not all kids in America get equal opportunities. And I agree that this is a tragedy and things should be done to address this. The new course should be to look for indicators, such as families living in areas of crime over a certain %, income under a certain mark, or school scores below a certain mark. You'd think someone as progressive as Bill Gates would get it. Apparently, not.

That is patently untrue. Caucasians are NOT specifically excluded. This is a list of eligibles and while it doesn't not include Caucasians per se, it also doesn't include several other groups and it certainly doesn't state "no Caucasians". Many Hispanics ARE Caucasian! (Hispanic is not a racial group).
