Thinks Party Should Close for Repairs

"Could people like Bob Dole, even Ronald Reagan - could you make it in today's Republican Party?" host Chris Wallace asked Dole on "Fox News Sunday."

"I doubt it," Dole said. "Reagan wouldn't have made it. Certainly, Nixon couldn't have made it, because he had ideas and- We might have made it, but I doubt it."

The 1996 presidential nominee went further, saying his party should close up shop until it's figured things out.

"I think they ought to put a sign on the national committee doors that says 'closed for repairs' until New Year's Day next year and spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas," Dole said

Agreed! The Republicans have become the ultra right wing. On the plus side this has moved the Dems to the centrist position. (Yeah a few real liberals exist - Kucinich - but they're mostly gone.) Obama is far closer to Reagan than Republicans care to admit. Obama the socialist, communist appears to have driven corporate profits to the highest amount ever. (hmmm)

Hint Republicans it's 2012. If you want to win 2014 you have to do more than vote against Obama. You need some real ideas, yourself.

If the Dems were merely centrist then the Republicans could still stake out the right. The reason that the Republicans have had to go to the ultra-right is to stay on the right side of the Dems who have moved to the right of center.

@Fluffy,

I think there's some truth to both ideas that Dems moved right because of their own issues and due to Republican moving out of that position. In the 80s Reagan melded the 'Christian' extremists with the Republican Party. Giving them a much larger political voice, than say in the 60s/70s. This helped to move Republicans further to the ultra right wing. Those centrist Republicans had no place to go so they shifted to the Democratic party.

Not unlike in the 60s/70s when the racist Democrats, mostly in the south, jumped over to the Republican Party because the Dems were giving equal rights to minorities.

Republicans need to seriously sit down and compare the platforms and approaches of Lincoln and Eisenhower to the modern Republican party. You won't find much in common. There's been a long historic shift right for both parties in the USA.
