well, he's sorta got a point. I just don't know how he's going to make it work....
Boris is just following the typical western perspective that Muslims are just a bunch of dangerous nutters one revelation from Allah away from blowing themselves up on a bus. Here is the sort of radicalisation he is talking about:
"The only reason we have killed this man today is because Muslims are dying daily by British soldiers. And this British soldier is one … By Allah, we swear by the almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone. So what if we want to live by the Sharia in Muslim lands? Why does that mean you must follow us and chase us and call us extremists and kill us? … when you drop a bomb do you think it hits one person? Or rather your bomb wipes out a whole family? … Through [many passages in the] Koran we must fight them as they fight us … I apologise that women had to witness this today but in our lands women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your governments, they don’t care about you. You think David Cameron is gonna get caught in the street when we start busting our guns? Do you think politicians are going to die? No, it's going to be the average guy, like you and your children. So get rid of them. Tell them to bring our troops back … leave our lands and you will live in peace."
This is slap on the head bonkers because a Muslim is saying it about one of our lads (and about our most noble and honourable politicians) and lambasting our weapons as horrors we inflict upon the world rather than what we know them to be, instruments of peace, emissaries of civilization.
This is certainly very different from our gentile western ways exemplified by that great statesman, George Dubya Bush who opined "you are either with us or you are with the terrorists" to explain why it was wrong to object to dropping bombs on a country in which most people were not even remotely involved with the 9/11 attacks and then, further, to bless a country completely unrelated to the attacks with raining death presumably because we still had so much love to give.
Oh, but those crazy Muslims don't understand why it's right for us to kill them and so they get unreasonably upset and want revenge and who want to kill us while we were merely "responding" and "taking strong action".
But that is the backwards world we live in - language, as Orwell implied, has become the plaything of the powerful, a way to stop thought rather than encourage it.
When they use their primitive weapons to kill one of our soldiers then the nation shall mourn. When our soldiers kill them and their wives and sons and daughters we are defending themselves and/or terribly sorry for the collateral damage, fog of war and all that, old chap.
When the we mourn and gather for our fallen we are merely honouring them and displaying our high moral values and empathy. When they gather to bury their dead they are merely creating a target composed of terrorist sympathizers.
And of course, the classic - when they fly a suicide kamikaze mission to take out targets and a lot of people, or when they blow themselves up in front of soldiers at a checkpoint, these are acts of cowardice. On the other hand, our pilots who drop tens of tons of high explosives from far beyond the reach of guns and rockets or who fire missiles at goat herders or teenagers in eateries while sitting at a video terminal half a world away are brave heroes.
Hypocrisy happens when you can't see that a=b and b=c means that a=c. Just because we use different words to describe the same things depending on who is doing the things doesn't make those things actually different. "Oh yes, but when WE do it ..."
There are plenty of crazy ideas going around but putting people in care because they are upset that we kill so many people like them is not how to get at the root of the problem. In fact, it's an attempt to bury the problem so that we can make our bad behaviour safer for ourselves. The craziest idea is that we should be allowed to kill who we want, wherever and whenever we want, and never have to worry about the consequences.
Sure, Islam has plenty of crazy ideas - just like Christianity and Judaism and all of the other religions, i.e. a belief in things that are plainly not true. However, the idea that if some group is attacking your group and they persist in attacking your group then ultimately you may have to attack back is not a religious idea and it's not particularly crazy, but it is the thing that the bully most fears.
