'to protect vulnerable members of communities'

The home secretary's decision clashes with the expert opinion of her own Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), which has said there is insufficient evidence that chewing qat causes health or wider problems in society to justify a ban in Britain.

UK government ignoring scientific evidence to implement idiotic policies? Whodathunkit?

Looks like vulnerable people will see the price of their qat go up.

Perhaps although, if other previously legal substances are anything to go by, probably not.

However, by the same measure, the quality will almost certainly deteriorate.

Professor Nutt's view:
Now this is embarrassing. I'm expected to have something to say aboutTheresa May's intention to ban the plant-drug qat, but due to a texting error by a new intern, I'd been preparing my thoughts on the Tory plan to ban cats, a plan which I now learn may not exist. Fortunately for her, I find that many of the same arguments apply, so I'm not quite back at square one.
The proponents of a ban on cats qat may be well intentioned, but rely on a mixture of exaggerated, selective, anecdotal, prejudiced and most frequently erroneous and illogical arguments. Cats are Qat is indeed associated with harm, which can be very serious at times, but it is unwise to generalise from the most extreme cases, or assume that cats are qat is solely to blame for complex problems of owners users.
Advocates for a ban are sometimes prone to demonise cats qat and, cynically or credulously, to fuel unfounded fears against owners users.Historically, cat owners were persecuted as witches. Qat users find themselves linked spuriously to terrorists, the ultimate folk-devils of our era.

Never heard of it.

Indeed, many people haven't as alluded to by the Daily Mash:
MILLIONS of Britons are considering giving khat a go after hearing about it for the first time this week.

The newly-illegal plant that can be chewed to produce a stimulant effect, everyone has discovered after Theresa May told them all about it.

Team leader Nikki Hollis said: “As a busy career woman, I only get to hear about interesting new drugs when they are banned, or sometimes unbanned.
“I thought, why should Somali cab drivers have all the khat fun?
“So I just bought some and my first complaint is that it’s {bleep} massive, basically it’s a hedge.
“Still, it’s a fun cocaine alternative with a funky ethnic vibe.”
:D

Cool thanks :pint:

Speaking of which, what safe natural supplements, if any, do you guys like for mood/relaxation? I've tried a few. Saint John's Wort would be good but upset my stomach. I like Kava Kava but am leery about some of the fringe concerns of liver damage. Others like 5-HTP seem useless.

Hmm.... I dunno about safe and natural but for relaxation or mood there aren't many things I haven't tried over the years. Some of these I still enjoy, some of them I used to enjoy and some of them I never enjoyed, yet there isn't a single one I would recommend off the bat. Not even St. Johns Wort, which didn't do anything for me either. ;)

A bloody good cup of tea!

Vanilla chai being my current tipple at the moment.:D

I think I drink far too much tea. Too easy, sitting at a desk all day with an urn of boiling water nearby.

Bah, clearly not drinking enough if you're thinking such blasphemy :p

The urn though sounds like a wonderful time saver!
