Apparently not!

President Obama, along with first lady Michelle and their two daughters have decided to cancel a safari in Tanzania for their trip to Africa later this month. Regardless, the presidential trip to Africa will cost $60 to $100 million. Massive amounts of security are expected to tail the president, in both the sky and land during the trip.

How much is the president supposed to make per year again?

Security for the trip will be extraordinarily tight. Hundreds of U.S. Secret Service agents will be dispatched to secure facilities in Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania. In addition, a Navy aircraft carrier or amphibious ship, with a fully staffed medical trauma center, will be stationed offshore in the event of an emergency.

"Military cargo planes will airlift in 56 support vehicles, including 14 limousines and three trucks loaded with sheets of bullet-proof glass to cover the windows of the hotels where the first family will stay. Fighter jets will fly in shifts giving 24-hour coverage over the president's airspace so they can intervene quickly if an errant plane gets too close," according to the Post.

Quick faethor, find a way to blame Rand Paul!

Rand? Nah he'll just put on his makeup to stand in front of cameras and complain.

The $60-$100Million cost is an estimate. One would base estimates on recent similar trips. The Clinton's trip to Africa cost $43Million. The Bushes took 7 of such trips. Thus, it's likely the estimated is based in large part on the actual costs of the Shrubs. To be fair let's assume a bit more then Clinton (inflation you know) but less then Obama - how about $50M that's on the low side of half way between 43 and 60.

So the Bushits spent an estimated $350Million (and it's probably bit low as they went on their safari) traveling in Africa. As of right now that fiscally conservative Republican overall spent more on Africa than the 'liberal' Obama. Hmm, the Republican Tea Party Conservative outrage was where? I hear crickets!

Besides don't you think people should visit their homeland? ;)

I sometimes wonder if those calculated costs include things like the salaries of the staff and security personnel. If so, then those figures are probably not telling us the full story as those staff & personnel would be getting that salary either way. And if you were to calculate things that way, Bush's trip to the USS Abraham Lincoln would have "cost" over a billion dollars.

Err, the Tea Party was founded in 2009. Sorry to burst your bubble but they do not have a time machine :p

So you are saying other presidents wasted insane amounts of money(during better times), so Obama should too? We should be peasants and the president our king?

But of course they were. See the Koch Bros lost the White House so they had to take their power 'to the streets' and buy themselves a puppet group to use.

Some of us out there need to realize that Republicans are only 'conservative' when they're not driving the nation. It's fairly hypocritical for people to decry $100M of spending but not have been upset at over $350Million for the same purpose. Republicans said jackshit about Bush's wasteful ways. (Not singling Redrumloa out, speaking in general.)

In related news the "conservative" ex-prez, GWBush, now has the record for the highest payments out of office for any ex-President. Over $1.3Million we pay/reimburse him to be an ex. He has a far easier job now then he did for under $400K as President. And Cheney wouldn't be alive if the Gov Healthcare didn't pay for that baboon to get a human heart.

Since the news was from a Catholic website I thought I'd look up the Pope's spending. 2010 the Pope went to the UK. The trip cost over 20Million pounds (about $30M) within the UK. Now the Catholic Church only paid about 8Million pounds. The remaining 12Million went to UK people as Gov spending. I'm sad enough about paying Obama's vacation. But, at least he's the President of my nation. One can make some excuse for respecting the office, even if you don't like the man. Imagine if the Pope came here and 92% of us didn't care but still had to pay. (NOTE: Catholics make up about 8% of the UK.) Hello Catholics I think you got something in your eye, you better get that checked out.
