Ultimately we will all have to care. Some guy is riding a bicycle to work because he realizes that oil is a finite resource then some yahoo drives 2 blocks to the Burger King in some humungo truck and Mr. bike guy will realize that his selfless act is just allowing someone else to cheat more. In reality, truck guy must die for the good of us all because greedy people will kill us all, but the wall is so far away we can't justify the action yet - but we will.

Most human societies have punished the selfish out of necessity because if the cheaters are allowed to prosper then everyone will have to become a cheater to compete to get their fair share and that will destroy the resources on which the group depends. Over history many societies have sprung up, grown large, acquired great power and wealth and then forgotten the lesson and rotted from greed until they collapsed. Failure to enforce good behaviour leads to ruin.
