As I have always said, Charlie Crist is a joke and will always be a joke. As he announces his departure from the GOP today, you will still hear the coffin nails being pounded into his career.

When Charlie Crist officially leaves the Republican Party to run as an independent, he might as well watch his political career fade even further from sight in his rearview mirror. His moderate to liberal values have already distanced him from most conservatives. His departure from the Republican Party will seal his fate.

Other than President Obama, Crist runs a close second in the race for the fastest falling popularity poll numbers. When Crist won the Florida governor’s seat, he was put forth by some elite from the old guard Republican Party as the new face of the Party. The so-called new face of the Republican Party seemed to gain some temporary traction. Crist enjoyed soaring approval ratings. These ratings caused Crist to moderate his views even more. He appointed some liberal Democrats to office and made appointments merely to please certain segments irrespective of how ill-equipped the appointees might be for the job.

Crist then tried to ride the moderate McCain train, hoping he might become the next Vice President, or at least that he would gain valuable air time for another political foray. But riding the McCain train did not go well for Crist. In fact, it is because of politicians like Crist, who suffer from conservative laryngitis and whose conservative compass spins in circles, that the Republican Party suffered such a stunning defeat in 2008. Even some conservative and moderate counties in Florida voted for the most liberal president in American history. The Republican Party had lost its way and Crist was supposed to be the poster child of the new Party.

Buh-bye Charlie, don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

OTOH it shows that the Republican party doesn't appreciate moderates.

I can only speak for myself, but I don't like career politicians. You know, the ones who have zero conviction and just lick their finger and stick it in the air to see which way the wind is blowing? The ones who campaign for against taxes and insurance companies, have taxes and insurance rates rise under your watch and claim victory for some no existent decrease. Charlie is a fake, as I have been saying for years.

When Charlie was mentioned for possible VP candidate with McCain, I argued with Republicans on this very board what a slimeball he was, but it went back long before that.

Here's an example of a Crist position.

Crist: Oil spill makes you re-think things
http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/news_p ... hings.html

Gov. Charlie Crist is obviously in a deep-thinking mood these days. And Crist said the Louisiana oil rig explosion is causing him to re-think his previous support for expanding oil drilling closer to Florida shores if it’s “far enough, clean enough and safe enough.”

Yup, gotta get that tree hugger vote now so must modify positions.

Crist is in (political) survival mode. He was at one time the political "darling" of the Republican Party in Florida but he fell from grace when he publicly supported Obama's stimulus (something that is still be debated as to its effectivity but that is another topic). Also, once Rubio started to make gains, Crist saw the writing on the wall. In order to continue to be a "viable" candidate, he had no choice but to move to "independent". Crist couldn't move to "democrat" as they are (poll wise) out of favor and likely to suffer at the polls in November. So, by "claiming" the "independent" candidate slot, he hopes to keep at least some of his Republican supporters as well as pull from both conservative Democrats and independents. Time will tell if he survives.

With regards to Faethor's comments, I'm not so sure I would agree. Crist (as Red so correctly points out) is so "wishy washy" on the issues that I'm not sure he could ever be called a moderate. He knew what the mood in the party was and he willingly crossed the line and shot his proverbial foot off. He's a big boy and knew the risks.
