James Powell could barely speak on the day he died; cancer had confined him to bed and heavy painkillers left him only semi-lucid. Yet the mood was almost celebratory as 25 people -- family, friends and volunteers -- gathered in a large living room to tell stories and say goodbye on the day Powell chose to end his suffering.

I'm sorry if the forum category seems off but I had a hard time choosing for this one. Certainly not religion but maybe Philosophy?

Definitely got a philosophical edge to it, yeah.

But yeah, I'd like to think that if I was in this sort of state, someone would have the good grace to put me out of my misery.

Sure does make Obamacare Death Panels a bit more real, doesn't it? Sure sounds like it's perfect situation for lots of regulations, gotta make sure this is done right and proper after all.

Oh what a slippery slope when government is in charge of your life, and death. Hope they mouse click the correct button every time, would suck to get the email in your spam folder that grandma is scheduled to be put down a day after the fact.

No, it doesn't. As I said yesterday and I'll repeat this every time I come across the above phrase: It was retarded when Palin said it, it's retarded now. Just stop.

Because having assisted suicide in a completely unregulated environment totally wouldn't be exploited....

You think they don't have that power over you now?

Nope but it sure does make you sound reading comprehension challenged. Are you sure you're not Fade?

You might want to reconsider this post and read thoughtfully the topic. I've quite recently had to say goodbye forever to someone close, and I never forget that. Turning your back, walking out the door, knowing that I'd never see him again, this, and the reaction of my parents are burned in my memory.

So, you can put your little death panel obsession in a personal place where the sun never shines.

Interesting. I wouldn't have pegged you for a anti-death penalty sort. But, it would seem you don't want the government in charge of death. Does this extend to the military too? Or are they exempt as long as they kill non-US citizens?

I don't have the right words, but I am touched.

I have found that many Americans are intimidated by death. they try to make believe it doesn't exist.
the fact is that without death, life is not as precious. Death should be respected and "celebrated". maybe honored is a better word, I don't know.

anyway, a person is more than just a bag of flesh and if one's body is making it impossible to live a good and useful life - a dignified, creative life - that person has the right to want a respectful exit.
