I've been following the case for a while but have been consistently surprised at the tone used by CNN.

Seems I'm not the only one.

--edit-- town name should be Stuebenvile... if a mod could alter it I'd appreciate it.

Sure it's not Stupidville?

Heh, I originally typed it as stuburnville :-)

Reading Reddit many of the comments from folk living near the place were none too complimentary about the place or its denizens. One of the things that surprised me was many of them stating that whilst they were shocked, they weren't surprised by the attempts to try to hush it up.

I seem to recall someone on here making a similar statement wrt that coach that was caught abusing kids, something about the way some small towns would go to extreme lengths to protect those in the football teams.

Jeebus, kind of a kick the nuts for all victims of crime...

Original thread HERE.

Funyy, in my thread people were trying to rationalize the rapists. What gives?

Wait, that's not funny

I don't see what was in that thread was rationalising as much as it was them looking at how and why such things get given a pass in a given society.

If a person is raised all their lives to believe that being good at football will give you a free pass on bad shit, is it any wonder that some will abuse it?

Their crime is one of the most heinous that one can commit against another, I doubt anyone would argue that and whilst I disagree with the idea of them being tried as adults I agree that their punishment, of its face at least, is lacking. But at the same time, I can also make the case that being raised in an environment that consistently reinforced the false belief that it was OK was a large factor in why it happened.

To be clear, it's not that I hold them less responsible, but that I suggest that the town itself also bares some responsibility in this. They acted as enablers.

But I could be wrong in how I'm interpreting their comments.

as I understand it the sports culture makes the assumption that having a skill in sports means you get a pass when you act like a barbarian

in some ways it's similar to when a preist molests a child.....the religious community just goes WHOOPS! But he's a holy man! he's not so bad, really.

and they both make a big effort to cover up.

So the guys who got convicted for rape got a bit over a year, but a guy who republished facebook postings and tweets about the rape (originally posted by guys calling themselves the rape crew) could get 10 years.

Given that one of the people who pursued this case after local PD washed their hands of it was effectively run out of town, it comes as little surprise that law enforcement are now looking to punish those that publicly shamed them into taking action. With the hacking they have an easy excuse and likely an easier win than if they tried to go after the initial whistle blower, far less chance of blowback from the public too.

Ahem :-D

An update on the Steubenville case:

Coach renewed for two more years.

Apparently lessons haven't been learned by some.

But yes, either way bloody atrocious.

It is amazing how fucked up this country can be on both sides of the spectrum, from knuckledraggers like this chump to complete political correct nonsense on the other side. What happened to common sense? Or was there ever common sense to begin with?

It seems being moderate simply doesn't get the traction or recognition that being a swivel eyed loon does. The problem with ignoring those in the middle is that it further polarises whatever the issue is being covered.

Depending on how cynical you're feeling you might be tempted to think this is a deliberate action on their part so as to keep things as divisive as possible.

It's the media who wants you to be upset so you don't stop watching them, like a hare in headlights. At least, it works that way for many people.
It's called profit maximization. They NEED to do stir things up.

which is why I don't watch the f*cking news

Me neither. If I only hear the little underlying "urgency" sound of "news" it's *zap*.
I got my news from newspapers, so I can re-read it, google things, and give it time to fit it in it's context.
I don't want to be an orchestrated bunny.
