There’s an old joke we Republicans used to tell that goes something like this: “If you’re young and not a Democrat, you’re heartless. If you grow up and you’re not a Republican, you’re stupid.” These days, my old friends and associates no doubt consider me the butt of that joke. But I look on my “stupidity” somewhat differently. After all, my real education only began when I was 30 years old.

An interesting piece which describes how the Republican party seemingly has a blind spot when in comes to privilege.

The joke is liberal versus conservative. The failure is believing that the Democratic Party is liberal OR the Republicans are Conservatives. Neither characteristic is a truism.

I think nihilistic would probably better describe both parties. There's that much of a disconnect between the politicians and people on the ground that the term "representative" seems to be to be a bit of a stretch these days. And that applies both to US and UK politics imho.

his story is mine too... disillusioned until i saw the real delusion...
excerpt:

No longer oblivious, I couldn’t remain in today’s Republican Party, not unless I embraced an individualism that was even more heartless than the one I had previously accepted. The more I learned about reality, the more I started to care about people as people, and my values shifted. Had I always known what I know today, it would have been clear that there hasn’t been a place for me in the Republican Party since the Free Soil days of Abe Lincoln.

not all democrats are born in bordellos... some of us found truth on the "highway of death"...

foxhole may have made me crazy, but it would never make me stupid. republicans start wars and do little if nothing to prevent them.... and they certainly dont end them or clean up the aftermath... eisenhower was the last "honest man" to ever hold that office...
