but haven't had a chance to start reading it yet. A friend of mine at work who read it really liked it.

The book was interesting, but the style was a little annoying sometimes. I think that was because John (at least this is how it came across) was still trying to justify to himself how he ended up doing these things that he now found he didn't believe in. In that respect there was a bit too much naval gazing and "woe is me". Other than that, good coverage of the ground.

One thing he is wrong about, of course, is that he thinks this sort of thing is new. The British Empire did quite a lot of it's work through the Bank of England and through private companies - with the Crown and its navies and armies coming in for backup to protect British interests if things got hot.
