WTF is up with our brethern to the north? Harper just put a certified acupuncturist and chiropractor Gary Goodyear as the science and technology minister. Did you learn nothing from us for the last 8 years. Nothing like a pseudoscientist quack in charge of science.

I was thinking that the other day. Americans and Canadians swapped minds or something. You guys pick the progressive guy and we stick with the religious goof. Almost tempted to move to the US! Ok not really, but Harper really is a goof. This certainly isn't the lamest thing he's done.

Harper is not our stooge. He works for someone else. Unfortunately our country is also full of shallow morons who take to much of the "news" at face value. Yes, Harper DID learn from Bush (or rather, the same people that backed Bush backed Harper).

Fortunately he has only a minority again so the rest of the parties have leverage and the opposition parties' job in Canada is to say "No!!!" a lot, even when they agree.

As an aside, I did read an article just after the election that talked about Harper and his long term viability as party leader. The basic gist was that since he failed to get a majority in a time where it was clearly most opportune for him to do so, he too may need to be booted as leader of the Conservative party as he's had two runs at it already. He doesn't seem like the type to give up power easily (or ever), but his own party may want to replace him. Considering the Canadian economy is sliding into recession, and may not improve before the next election, he'll be damaged goods and easily lambasted by the opposition (he was this time too, but the economic crunch didn't really take effect yet and people were still feeling good about things so the criticism almost felt over the top - but it won't next time around). That, and the Liberals will not repeat their leadership mistakes again. Well, ok, they might, but hopefully not.

But then again, if you think about it, the Conservative Party really is the Harper Party, as he created it and he runs it. The party has little depth and there aren't many other leadership candidates that have a chance at getting a majority either. Could you see McCay as Prime Minister with a majority behind him? Didn't think so.

My cousin voted conservative last time.

Hey, forget everything I said. It turns out that the NDP and the Bloc have vowed to reject the Conservative's budget. If the Liberals vote against it too, the government is kaput. We might be headed for another election real soon. Actually, far more likely is a Liberal-NDP coalition of sorts. We may even get a new Liberal party leader popped into place over night, who knows. Either way, it seems Mr Goodyear won't have much opportunity to do much of anything. Who said Canadian politics is boring? :-)

What a great day for Canadians!

Liberals unveil plan to topple Tories

It's not a done deal yet, but things are looking good. Can't wait to see my Conservative voting friends tonight.

If Harper is kicked out and replaced with a Liberal-NDP coalition, I'm hoping we'll see the death of Canada's yet to be voted-on DMCA equivalent laws. Economy aside, that's the biggest issue for me, which is something Harper has been working on for months.
