Twelve people have been killed by a gunman who went on the rampage across Cumbria in north-west England.

Taxi driver Derrick Bird shot dead a colleague in the town of Whitehaven before driving through the countryside apparently targeting people at random.

Twenty-five others were injured, three critically and five seriously. Police said they had 30 separate crime scenes.

Mr Bird's body was found in a wooded area in Boot in the Lake District and two weapons have been recovered.

Wow, terrible tragedy!

How did this happen in a country where guns are illegal? I was told making guns illegal kept this from happening?

Indeed.

How did this happen in a country where guns are illegal?

Skirting around your sarcasm as best I can, details are still scant. First of all, guns are not completely illegal in the UK. Furthermore, as long as it's legal to make them in other countries, they'll continue to be smuggled in.

If *all* guns *everywhere* were illegal it would certainly make this type of thing less likely.

Indications are he was a licensed gun owner, according to the Beeb.

Horrid events.

As for the gun thing, if it wasn't a gun it'd be something else, a guy back home burned a load of school kids once with a modified fire extinguisher.

In a slightly odd twist, one guy he pointed his gun at is a cyclist called "Barrie Moss", yes it appears to be the very same Mr Moss.
