De-privatized prision saves $1 million/ year

wow, imagine that! someone is being Efficient! good for him!

I have heard about some of these private jails that have a shocking death rate. I'm sure the fake republicans don't care because they feel people in jail aren't human. and i suppose that includes innocent people who just happen to be held for a couple of weeks, have a medical issue, are ignored and die because of that disregard.
yeah, that's Sooooooo Christian of them

Private jails are run a lot like slum lords run their rentals. The basic rule is spend absolutely nothing on maintenance. When it falls down someone else will step in to take over. You'll be gone by then sucking the value out of some other building.

The cycle is : Let someone else build it. When they get in financial trouble take it over cheap. Use it up 'till it falls apart. Dump it onto someone else.

In Public/Private partnerships the someone elses are taxpayers who build the facilities then clean up the left over mess. In the case of prisons, tax payers also pay all the rent.

It's a beautiful system unless you are the tax payer.

You're both right on. The idea that privatization saves money might work in the short term. In the long term there's often not enough penalties to ensure it's cost effective. It's far too easy to let the criminals police themselves, which is a reason why the death rate is higher, and far too easy to let things go in disrepair. Afterall the taxpayers need the system so if something goes wrong they'll just bail out the prision. Or imagine worse the business simply goes bankrupt. Then there's 'no fault' it didn't work we had to close the doors. This again leaves the taxpayer on the hook to clean up the mess. There are far too many protections for the privates who run the system.
