i felt the same way about him... i thought i was alone...

To be paralyzingly, painfully, hopelessly unfunny is not a particular defect or shortcoming in, say, a cable repair man or a Supreme Court justice or a Navy Seal. These jobs can be performed humorlessly with no loss of efficiency or impact. But to be paralyzingly, painfully, hopelessly unfunny is a serious drawback, even lapse, in a comedian. And the late Bob Hope devoted a fantastically successful and well-remunerated lifetime to showing that a truly unfunny man can make it as a comic. There is a laugh here, but it is on us.
Give a man a reputation as an early riser, said Mark Twain, and that man can thereafter sleep until noon. Quick, then—what is your favorite Bob Hope gag? It wouldn't take you long if I challenged you on Milton Berle, or Woody Allen, or John Cleese, or even (for the older customers) Lenny Bruce or Mort Sahl. By this time tomorrow, I bet you haven't come up with a real joke for which Hope could take credit.

....

There were many cringe-making references last week to Hope's doggedness in entertaining the brave boys overseas. I have met more than one veteran who says that those USO concerts were the last straw. Here's Canby, extracting the last ounce of brilliance from a Hope gag in Saigon after an officers' billet had been blown up by the Vietcong. "I was on the way to my hotel, and I passed another hotel going in the opposite direction." Nobody had the bad taste to recall the moment at which Hope was openly booed by the grunts in Vietnam: He was to the comedy of the war what Nixon was to its negotiation and what Billy Graham was to its husky religiosity.

Well, Bob Hope really DID say funny things. But maybe people just don't appreciate his background in the vaudeville school of comedy/entertainment

I guess I'm one of those people that finds the history of American comedy interesting - in fact I have been known to watch old films. You know, the ones without sound. :D

I even watch films made in other countries. The ones with accents and different languages and shit ;)

Bob Hope made some amazing films way back in his early career. He knew Timing. I understand he may not be to everyone's taste and maybe people got tired of his bits when he got older, but there's no denying his talent and very long career.

I'm a huge fan of Burns and Allen
Gracie Allen was one of THE most talented comedians Ever! have you heard the radio shows?? F'ing brilliant!
if you think saying 'silly' things while STILL remaining incredibly charming is easy, go try it.

When I hear Burns and Allen on a radio show it remains completely fresh and adorable even today.

I think Bob Hope was amusing for the times. But, over the decades things evolve. What we find funny today may not be what they'd have found funny in WWII. Some of the things we find funny today were just be patentably offensive to those of our age in the 30s and 40s.

I do appreciate Burns and Allen but I find Bob Hope not as funny. May do find Hope amusing. I also appreciate Lenny Bruce and Andy Kaufman. Though the types of comedy is vastly different and it serves different purposes.

The ones with accents and different languages and shit
reminded me of that joke (I forget the movie)... "I eat pieces of shit like you for breakfast"..."You eat shit for breakfast? Gross!"

I admit that I appreciate a vast collection of comedians.
Sam Kinison was brilliant
Milton Berle was funny right to the end of his life
Cloris Leachman BREATHS funny
Billy Connelly is feckin' brilliant :D
Julia Louis-Dreyfus is one of THE funniest humans to walk the earth

The Marx Bros are without peers
Lucille Ball = brilliant

I could go on and on.....

Now for the question you should have asked.

Did Democrats ever say anything funny?

The answer is yes. These answers are truly funny, and they get better as the video goes on!

Typical Democrat one liners.

Pft! Everyone knows Wayne & Shuster are the funniest TV personalities ever!

Unfortunately Republicans don't say anything funny. The say stupid stuff like evolution doesn't exist. Instead they claim it's spirit orbs from the planet Kolob. Not funny! Scary as hell to even consider such lunacy would run the nation.

OOOooo, I see you don't like it when someone shows you the typical Obama voter.
