Steve Jobs hated Flash. Hated it. And not just a little bit.

In case someone missed the news it appears Adobe is cutting Flash for mobile devices and focusing on HTML5 instead. IMO good. Flash and Acrobat are always bloated and unusable. There are better ways to do the same stuff. Almost everytime I see a 'PDF' document I cringe. Hate the stuff!

I have no problem with PDFs, they serve a useful purpose. They're great for eBooks or manuals or whatever. If it's Adobe reader you dislike, there are free alternatives that work fine for me.

As for Flash, that too had it's place. I can understand why some people don't like it though. As for Steve Jobs killing it? All the Apple fan boys will insist it was their one true savior that forced Adobe to drop it on the mobile platform, but the fact is that Flash sucked on the mobile platform even when they worked closely with both Google and RIM to develop it for the mobile devices. Flash seems to only run nicely on Windows systems and I'm not sure why. I think Adobe just gave up on mobile flash, quite possibly for technical reasons. Having said that, I'm not sure that Adobe will pull the plug on existing mobile devices, they just said they're not developing it for any new mobile devices. I expect Android and Blackberry to continue getting updates for a while (they probably have a contract to do so). At any rate, expect to see new HTML5 tools coming out of Adobe (if not already).

My problem with PDFs is similar to my problem with Powerpoint. Both are great tools if one knows how to use them. It appears that people abuse their use and don't quite get what they're for. Most PDFs I run across look like mid-80s warmed over desktop publishing puke.

PDF's can be good for PRINTING. if that is your goal, PDF away!

but if you wish to read, then use e book fomats. ePUB is very common and works on NOOK devices. Kindles have thier own format.
I've become aware of calibre - works on linux, windows and I think on MAC's

in my opinion, ebook formats will eventually replace pdf's. except when you need to print out something, of course
