Don't protest the Neo-Nazis

Those pictures are pretty grim.
 
Some quick googling found this website where someone passing himself off as some kind of horse expert claims they may have been spooked by flares and stampeded.

It's possible that the police did crack down on them as far right groups tend to find support in the police ranks, but the politicians in power are not likely to sympathize with neo nazi groups or tolerate police that do stuff like that - especially with elections coming up.

Hard to say. Only thing I learned about bolting horses is when they bolt through the woods try to keep your head lower than the horse is keeping his.

From the only footage I found it looks like the police made at least two passes through the crowd at the same gait. It also looks like there wasn't much room to get out of the way between the horses in the street and the cops on along the side of the street.
