Issues ettiquete guide

Canadian tourists are likely to be quite annoyed about being mistaken for Americans, the guide suggests — urging workers to keep an eye out for maple leaf pins or badges on tourists' clothing.
And that's about all they need to worry about for us. As for the Americans...

They can appear “informal to the point of being very direct or even rude” and won't ever hesitate about complaining, the guide says.
And that explains why we Canadians don't like to be treated like Americans.

Too true. The smart American traveler pretends to be Canadian, with the possible exception of when in Quebec, as we'd be suspected of being from Toronto.

Let me be very direct, rude, and even blunt. Thanks to Obamanomics, Americans won't be visiting. That is, except for Democratic politicians.

No one else can afford to go.

oh dear. Are Republican politicians so uniformly unsuccessful that not one of them could afford the airfare and event tickets? I suppose it could be true since the GOP is the party that destroyed the US economy

But surely such luminaries as Bush and Cheney can afford it. Surely Limbaugh can afford it. Or are those folks really crypto-Democrats?

Pretty sure all the bank heads down on Wall St. can afford it too. In fact I'm pretty sure that the only people who can't afford it are losers - and just as with all losers they always blame other people (like the government) for all their problems.

bingo!

actually, since Obama was elected I'm doing well

I think this is because of ME.

the gov just shouldn't get in my way.

fortunately he is not!

my grandparents plus mother came to this country and it's people like THAT who made this country great.

it's the whining assholes who diminish this once great country and have made it an embarrassment around the world

Given your president has made so much effort whipping up an ugly anti-British sentiment over the past few months, why would any American come to Britain?

Oh dear, this is not good. Americans need to polish their image to the world community and be better citizens. I am glad we have a president who understand this and has gone out of his way to apologize for our errors of the past. We are all citizens of the world.

I must admit, I like the new Red.

Heh... I think all the gov'ment paperwork has dun reformed Red. I'm curious to see how long he can maintain this pace before his irony levels reach critical mass and implode his head.

As an aside, if his paperwork clears, he too may get to encounter some of the many unpublished benefits such as additional chances to demonstrate your civic duty. For example, I just got another jury summons. I'm not really complaining, as I do realize the importance of it... I just wish they'd draw my name for my local city court once in a while. This is now 4 in a row, and the 3rd time in the past 5 years that I get to report to Wayne County's courts in downtown Detroit.

Yes, very important. Judges must decide whether a law has been broken because that is who they work for (the law). Juries may decide on whether the law is just because they work for the people. If juries delivered enough "not guilty" decisions for cases tried under unjust laws then unjust laws wouldn't be worth prosecuting and people would be freer.

Ilwrath, print out Fluffy's post and when they evaluate you as a viable jury member for a case just read it out loud and you'll be free to go home in just a few minutes.

I hinted at this philosophy in my letter to the sheriff when they called me in for a trial estimated to take 50 days!!! Worked like a charm. Got a very quick "you are excused" mailed right back.

I certainly understand where you're coming from. Of course, you do need to remember I'm going to Detroit's Wayne County criminal system, though. Personally, I feel the laws on murder, rape, and armed robbery are fairly just. The only real question is trying to figure out if the cops did some real work and got the right person, or if they took the easy way and just picked up the first seedy looking minority they stumbled across.

Unfortunately, good officers don't stay in Detroit very long. And, honestly, who could blame them?

There is pretty much universal agreement on these but what about possession of cannabis, file sharing, consensual sodomy or any other of a large number of "crimes" where you don't believe that they should necessarily be crimes or that you believe that the mandatory sentence for such crimes is excessive?

Oh, very true. I'd be a pain in the ass juror on a case like that. Of course, my point was that those trials don't typically show up where I'm going. I chose to list murder, rape, and armed robbery because those were the charges involved in three of the trials I was a potential juror for. (Actually one was 2 charges of 2nd degree murder, one was a charge of 1st degree criminal sexual conduct, and I forget the exact charges from the armed robbery case, as it was a while back, and I didn't serve on that one. And one case I never learned the charges -- we were simply informed we'd be waiting and then by mid-day we were released with the explanation that the trial was canceled when a plea bargain was reached.)
