Even I'm thinking about an iPad now...

A discovery of a cheap guitar FX box and synth last week has reawakened my interest in music and sounds (Pod XT live / Kawai K1 in case you're wondering).

A long time ago I used to write audio FX software for an old computer called the Amiga, it's a bit of an obscure system nowadays but I'm sure some of you have heard of it ;-)

Anyway, the big touchscreen has me intrigued for the possibilities of using an iPad as a way to program a synth, and also manipulate it in real time.

I could go for an EEEPad of course, it will be a lot more powerful but that means Android and IIRC you program that in Java or some variant thereof.

The iPad uses native Objective-C and has the usual Apple SDK goodness. I also want to do some OpenGL ES programming and it's also useful for that.

Any thoughts?
Anyone here programmed an iPad or iPhone?

P.S. I'm also going to ask on moobunny but I'll probably just be told I'm gay or something equally intelligent...

Unfortunately I've forgotten more than I ever knew about C programming, so I can't really say much about that, but let's not overlook the fact that you might be able to port your old software to the iPad and -- in about a week -- make more money than you EVER thought about with the Amiga platform...

The original idea was just to experiment but now you're giving me ideas...

I was initially thinking about how it'd be easy to control a modular synth by dragging connections to the different modules. But it's also obvious you be able to do things like real time filter adjustment as you played.

You don't need a do a full modular synth for that though. If I could knock up a simple synth app of some sort and add a clever control system, if it sounds good - my amiga apps did - I might sell a few.

Hmm...

If you do decide to write something for the app store, PLEASE let us know how your numbers work out. I'd also love to review it for segwayne.com, or ipadico.com (or both) when you're done.

If I do this, sure. But I've said I'll do lots of things and never do them!
