Lost in the laughter over the past two weeks has been GOP presidential candidate and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich's core point about America's future in space. We shouldn't just explore space, we should develop and even settle it, using the same enterprise-friendly approaches that helped open the West and the skies.

as anyone who knows even a little about me will realize I am all about going into space. And that a healthy space program is good for the economy.

newt is a wacko and his space idea is the ONLY rational notion he's ever had. Of course, I wouldn't trust him to actually understand how to pull something like this off.

The conservatives tell us how much extra the government spends. Now they tell us that instead the government should spend LOTS of money where 0 US Citizens exist. The new conservatives appear to be identifying more toliets to flush money down than anything else.

it just seems that way... in fact every other country with a space program is considering the exact same thing... i thought he was off his rocker for a minute too but it was because i was ill informed and caught up in the laughing...

excerpt "And it's not just the Russians.
Later this year, China plans to launch into orbit the first phase of its own space station. The country has already launched six people into outer space and hopes to put a man on the moon sometime after 2020.
India is working on its second robotic trip to the moon, with plans to land a rover on the moon's surface in two years. It wants to send a human into outer space by 2016.
The European Space Agency is studying a trip to Mars by conducting a 520-day simulated voyage to the red planet. Six volunteers from various countries have been locked in isolation in a windowless mock spaceship, eating canned foods — except when they trudged through red sand and spiked flags into a mockup of Mars' surface.
Iran plans to send a monkey into space in the summer, clearing the way for a man to follow. Countries such as Israel, Japan, North Korea and South Korea are busy building their own rockets and launching them from their own facilities.
Foreign countries are decades behind the U.S. in their space programs, said Jim Lovell, commander of the tumultuous Apollo 13 mission and a member of Apollo 8, the first mission to orbit the moon. But their human spaceflight programs are just beginning as the shuttle era comes to an end for NASA."

insanity would be launching a nuclear powered craft to go to the moon from earth, sanity would be sending raw materials into space and assembling it there.... mining outer space for minerals is the wave of the future... newt is at the forefront (i puked in mouth as i typed that)...

I'd gladly chip for another moot shot if Newt promises to be part of the first moon colony. Fine print: He has to stay there.

Yup, just let the Chinese and/or Russia stake claim to the vast resources of the moon.

The isotope is extremely rare on Earth but abundant on the moon. Some experts estimate there a millions of tons in lunar soil -- and that a single Space-Shuttle load would power the entire United States for a year.

You are confusing Newt as a conservative. I've posted many times on whyzzat that he is nothing more then a frugal socialist. This proves my point.

yeah, and let him take that douche sucktorum, bachman, palin, mitt, and every single wacko relgious nut job on the planet.
Since none of these morons understand science (or "believe" in it) they will all forget to snap their helmets on and the vacuum of space will suck out their last happy breaths as they pray to a god that doesn't exist.

and all the rational people left on earth will dance the Happy dance

whole problem with that line of thought is that we rely on the moon for our tides..what will happen when theve shaved 3/4s of that away in their energy grabbings

I'm figuring they will die well before that happens :drumroll:

Leander, I have always thought you might be a creationist.
You have just created another "Lunar Crisis".

At 1 meter a year rate, you have just moved the moon over 4 million kilometers further away from the earth.;)

correct answer = 38 mm per year

The only thing you can smell in Space is Klingons (referencing old ST:TOS saying).

Reason why NASA is becoming obsolete for near Earth orbit:

(cool CGI mixed in with test footage)

And latest video of engine test minus background music and CGI:

@Dammy.. Do you realize this engine was made by NASA funding over $70Million?
