Drug patents have been extended and extended (and other patents and copyrights too) under the theory that this encourages innovation. People who can benefit from their inventions will be more likely to invent. Of course, people who can live their entire lives quite well on a single invention are not likely to invent twice. Of course, exclusives rights work by being inherently anti-competitive. This also leads to higher prices. How much higher? Well, take this example.
