I need something new and fresh, any ideas? I don't stomach nu-metal or rap-metal, so please don't go there

There has got to be some good new bands? I'm waiting for Triptykon to release an album, but do they even count as new? It's more like Celtic Frost simply renamed. If there are no good new bands, what about old bands with new material I may not have heard?

Thanks in advance.

I've only just heard about Anvil. Haven't had a chance to check em out yet, but their first album was out in '81 and they're still going.

Something else not new (but always overlooked) - Brujeria. I'm sure you've heard of them, but they're often forgotten about so I thought I'd mention them.

I really got into SikTh a while ago. Shame they only did 2 albums before splitting up to do producing. It's pronounced sixth btw. I know the uncle of one of the guitarists, but no amount of pleading is making them get back together :-(

Machine Head aren't new, but check out their latest album (The Blackening). It's a good return to the form of their first album (Burn My Eyes). Hmm, just realised The Blackening was 2007, didn't think it was that long ago!

Nile and Zao are good extreme bands, but I haven't heard them in a while. I think Zao have a new album out soon though.

So, um, yeah, there are no good new bands that I've heard of ;)

Did you ever check out Probot?

Anvil - Remember the name only, maybe I'll give them a look/hear
Brujeria - I know and like them but am unaware of any recent albums? Might be worth a check.
SikTh - Never heard, what type of metal?
Machine Head - Call me weird, they don't do much for me :-/
Nile - I have one album and I am lukewarm, might have to try another one
Zao - Not familar, I'll check them out

I did test drive a newer(ish) CD from old school bands Pestilence and Suffocation the other day. I could take or leave the Suffocation CD, but the Pestilence CD was fantastic! I'm going to have to pick up their entire back catalog now :D I think they have a new CD coming out soon too.

Talking about old school... I sure do miss Strapping Young Lad, I hope they reform one day. The last CD was weakish, but everything else was fantastic. Heavy as a Real Heavy Thing and City still get heavy rotation here. There aren't may better songs than S.Y.L.

Time for a few 'tube links methinks.

Only a best of and a singles collection as far as I remember. Shame really as I thought they could be a long lasting band musically.

Progressive Metal apparently but that covers a lot. Basically, thrashy stuff with almost undecipherable vocals. Actually, you might not like them because one of the singers can be a little high pitched.

Scent of the Obscene (on their 1st album)
Bland Street Bloom (from their 2nd and last album)

Machine Head - Call me weird, they don't do much for me :-/
I only like their first and last albums. The rest is just average to me. I won't turn the others off if they're on the radio or tv, but I won't go out the way to hear those other albums either.

Zao - Not familar, I'll check them out
My Love, My Love (We've Come Back From The Dead).
The Rising End. The audio on this is a bit shit and tinny, but you'll still get a good idea of what they're like.

Forget that they used to be a christian band - they've got the cookie monster vocals and the heavyness of proper metal. They do belong in Terrorizer mag (dunno if you get that over there).

Old skool? I was listening to Iron Butterfly last week. Shame they're almost an unknown band in the metal genre. They should get credit like Black Sabbath and Venom.

As I said before I really haven't paid much attention to anything new except for Nine Inch Nails. Nothing new seems to interest me that much except for that Cannibal Corpse DVD set. Got it a few months ago and still haven't watched all of it yet though.

Been listening to a fair bit of The Beatles, Aerosmith and The Wildhearts. But nothing new in the metal scene. I can't even remember the last metal CD I bought  :(

Well, I should clarify. While Strapping Young Lad itself as a band only goes about 1995, the band members' histories go much further.

Gene Hoglan:

Also "old school" is can be interpreted in many ways, as you pointed out. For old school metal (general metal), I have been listening more to early Motorhead.

Eeek!

jk, I picked up a couple old Talking Heads CDs. Some really good songs mixed in with some really weak songs.

Give this album a shot:

Most recently I've been listening to Sonata Arctica. Possibly a bit tame for your tastes but I found them quite enjoyable none the less.

Maybe some Rammstein or Stabbing Westward? And you can't really go wrong with a little System of a Down...

/me hastily puts away Nightwish's Dark Passion Play...

--Edit--

Perhaps you should go here for inspiration? They tend to put on a lot of very very heavy stuff.

Holy thread necropsy Batman! Has it really been almost 10 full years since I posted this thread?

Since I posted this thread, there are plenty of "new to me" bands that I have been listening to for many years. Closer to the underground is Goatwhore.I've seen them live 5 times now and will go again every time they are anywhere relatively near local. The band themselves in person are some of the nicest guys you could meet, and they are my current favorite live band easily.

Another new to me is Behemoth. They started out underground but are relatively mainstream now. They've had an album chart as high as #34 on the Billboard 200 in the US. Not bad for a Black metal band from Poland. They are my current favorite band for their recent albums and videos.

You might want to check bandcamp.com if you need some fresh new takes on metal

I may, but I am in a different place now than 10 years ago. I currently have a long list of albums I need to buy. I am also deeply immersed in the local scene these days. The local metal scene is amazing! Just purchasing albums from the local scene has been keeping me busy.

(Great video!!!)
