In the interest of fairness, I am willing to give praise to President Obama as well as my usual criticism. He has finally done something that I support so for once, I will endorse his plan:

Obama energy plan to open Atlantic and Gulf for oil.

My only questions are:

1. What took him so long?
2. What will this cost him (politically)? I know the environmentalists cannot be happy with him now.

I always thought the main reason for not drilling was that there wasn't that much oil there in the first place.

Quid pro Quo

Didn't they already get theirs?

Well the issue isn't whether or not the oil is there. After all, both Russia and China have announced plans to siphon off all that oil for themselves.

The Bush agenda was to continue relying solely on Eastern oil, presuming they would run out, THEN we would drill and charge them "10k per barrel" for it. Now that other countries have said "we're just going to come steal it out from under your noses", there's no logic in holding off any more. Especially when it could be stored indefinitely anyway.

Yes, it will cost a bit of treehugger clout to make such a ballsy move, but saying it, and getting it approved by Congress (who've already lost a bit themselves this year thanks to Obama) are two different things.

And the rub is either they vote for Obama or don't vote. Now on the other hand 'Drill baby Drill' is a lost mantra for the Republicans. I predict it'll produce traction for the Dems this fall and for Obama in 2012.

Perhaps but don't feel secure in that statement just yet. The news is beginning to report that Obama's plans only permit soundings to be conducted but no definite timetable for drilling. Apparently drilling may "eventually" occur. I wonder what that timetable is? Stay tuned. I'm following this topic and will post updates as I see them online.

IMO the process is the same whether it was McCain that did this or Obama. Companies must research and select their best ROI. Environmental impacts, shipping impacts, and other studies must be conducted etc. At this point Obama can say we're not the reason things are delayed it's the courts. Judical is another branch of government and not under Obama's control.

Thinking of this it might even get more play. If those judges are Bush appointees then there's another political issue in Obama's favor. Many of the judges ex-Bush people because the Republicans have played block the judical nominee game.
