In Germany, France and Italy, but also in many other places, we find ourselves confronted with a generation of leaders ever more shortsighted and given over to electioneering: among them, none speak to Europe nor for Europe.

Continued.

5 years ago on AO I stated that a single European state was a fundamentally flawed project both on political and economic grounds, for that I was declared a "little englander" by some for saying so.

Somehow, "I told you so" simply doesn't cut it.

It is doomed because it is a project of the elite, not of the people. It is a new state set up for the control of resources by a powerful few. In that sense it is no different from many other giant unions (or empires) but it is trying to set itself up at a time when information is not the sole domain of those elites. It is harder to sell the mythology and easier for people to compare notes on how they are being screwed. It doesn't matter how often the elites tell everyone that the union is for their own good, it's obvious who is really receiving the benefit and who is losing.

Oh I know that, but at the time any such claim was dismissed as my being a little englander. So rather than fight that I simply pointed out the vastly different economic cycles that where present throughout Europe as well as the cultural/political differences that would inevitably go south if anything bad happened.
