Florida's 11.9 percent unemployment rate in January is the highest since May 1975, the state work force agency reported Wednesday.

The state's rate was up 0.2 percent from a revised rate of 11.7 percent in December and up from 8.7 percent a year ago. The rate represents a decline of 6,100 jobs over the month and a loss of 303,200 jobs compared to January 2009.

South Florida's unemployment has been even steeper than originally reported, according to revised annual estimates by Florida's Agency for Workforce Innvovation.

In Broward County, the January rate was 10.8 percent, compared with a revised rate of 10.2 percent a month earlier. Palm Beach County's January rate was 12.5 percent compared with 11.7 percent, revised upward for December.

Miami-Dade County's rate fell in January to 10.9 percent, but was revised in December to 11.5 percent.

A year ago January, South Florida's unemployment was in the range of 7.6 percent to 9 percent, according to revised rates for 2009.

Everytime they produce numbers, they fudge them to look lower than they really are and later quietly revise the numbers up. I thought Obama just claimed the recession was over?

I thought Obama just claimed the recession was over?

So did Bush, how many times? The numbers are just whatever they can pull out of a hat, nowadays. They have no basis in reality, and haven't in long time. It's just a lot more obviously bogus now. It's hard to convince the public that the good times are back when the general population all have bunches of friends and family members unemployed or hanging onto a job by a thread.
